Clearwater Family Attractions: Beach, Aquarium and Nature Days

Choose one main outing for each day of your Clearwater stay. The aquarium, downtown playgrounds, mainland nature trails and beach parks offer different kinds of family time, and each has its own journey from the accommodation.

Match the attraction to the children and the location

Clearwater Beach, Island Estates and mainland Clearwater are distinct parts of a family itinerary. A nearby-sounding name does not mean you can walk there from every beach hotel. The options below work best when you give each outing enough time for its own arrival, meal and return.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium: give animal interests a full outing

Clearwater Marine Aquarium is on Island Estates. Its visitor information explains the approach from Clearwater Beach and the Jolley Trolley connection. Animal experiences are priced separately from admission and have limited daily spaces, so check their availability before choosing your visit date.

The visitor FAQ describes an indoor-and-outdoor facility and a parking garage connected to the third-level entrance. It can provide a change from a beach day, but weather still matters. Leave beach wagons and folding chairs at the accommodation: the aquarium’s rules prohibit both. Give children one question to investigate, such as how a rescued animal is cared for, and leave room to linger at the parts they find interesting.

Coachman Park: playground time on the mainland waterfront

Coachman Park is in downtown Clearwater, with a playground and waterfront setting. It works as a short outing when a child wants to climb and play after several beach days. Check the park’s event and parking resources: areas near the concert venue may close for special events.

From a beach accommodation, treat this as a mainland excursion rather than adding it casually to the end of an already long beach session. Start after breakfast, let the playground be the main event, then eat and return to the accommodation. For toddlers, that is enough without another attraction between lunch and a nap.

Moccasin Lake: a quieter nature-focused day

Moccasin Lake Nature Park, at 2750 Park Trail Lane, offers trails and boardwalks through a preserve and is home to injured birds of prey. The city also identifies a nature center, picnic tables and restrooms. Choose it for children interested in birds, small wildlife and looking closely at habitats.

Admission is free. The city lists Monday and city-recognized holidays as closed, and new trail visitors must enter by 4:15 p.m., before the park closes at 5 p.m. Check the current city page before departure. Wear walking shoes and carry water; this is an outdoor-focused outing. Make the walk as short as the group needs, and follow any route restrictions posted on arrival.

Sand Key: make facilities part of the beach choice

Sand Key Park lists boardwalks, a nature trail, bathhouses with changing stalls and restrooms, and outdoor showers. For families, those practical details may matter more than choosing a beach from photographs. Its county parking system is separate from central Clearwater Beach lots; bring your vehicle’s plate number and a credit card for the pay station.

At our September 30, 2026 check, the county’s latest park update said the seawall section remained closed for marina-construction equipment staging until October 2026. Check that notice again before choosing a route through the park; the projected date does not guarantee the section has reopened.

A simple visit is beach play, a food break and a rinse before returning to the accommodation. Choose how much gear to carry according to the adults available to transport it. If a child needs help on the return walk, keep an adult free for that job before you commit everyone to chairs and coolers.

Caladesi: set aside a separate island day

The ferry route uses Honeymoon Island State Park in Dunedin, followed by a boat journey to Caladesi. It needs a different plan from walking out to Clearwater Beach: the ferry operator allows up to four hours on the island depending on when you buy your ticket and prohibits beach carts and wagons. Tickets are sold at the Honeymoon Island ferry office, not online, and departures depend on weather. The Caladesi family day-trip guide covers the road and boat legs, carried equipment and return arrangements.

Keep this optional until you have checked current park and ferry notices. The Caladesi park notice still warns that food service may be limited, so bring the food and water your family needs. A family that needs very flexible meal, restroom or nap timing may prefer another beach day near its accommodation.

A realistic four-day pattern

  1. Settle in: use the beach access nearest the accommodation and learn the room-to-sand route.
  2. Animal day: visit Clearwater Marine Aquarium, have lunch and return for a break. Make an evening outing optional.
  3. Choose one mainland outing: Coachman Park for active playground time or Moccasin Lake for a nature walk.
  4. Beach or island: choose Sand Key for a flexible beach day, or Caladesi when the ferry plan and conditions suit the family.

Check the family restaurant guide as you place meals, and use the rainy-day guide if the forecast changes. BeachDay's Clearwater accommodation delivery supports the longer stay: guests carry and set up the gear, then return it to the accommodation for pickup. Rentals have a four-day minimum.
