Make supervision the first arrangement
The American Red Cross swimming-safety guidance recommends close, constant attention to children, a designated water watcher in a group, and staying within arm’s reach of weak or inexperienced swimmers. Inflatable toys and swim rings do not replace adult supervision.
Discuss roles before carrying equipment onto the beach. One adult unpacking a cart may assume another is watching the children; make that handoff explicit. Keep phones and other distractions out of the supervision role.
Pack for each child’s actual activity
- A swimsuit that fits comfortably and suitable sun-protective clothing.
- Goggles the child has tried, if useful for the planned swim.
- A towel and a complete dry change of clothing.
- A separate bag for wet or sandy items.
- Appropriate personal flotation equipment where needed, selected for the child and activity.
The Red Cross advises Coast Guard-approved life jackets for young children and inexperienced swimmers around water, while emphasizing that a life jacket is only one layer of protection. Follow the product’s fitting instructions and the advice of qualified swimming professionals.
Keep swimming gear separate from beach toys
A bucket and shovel can be easy to pack for time on the sand. An inflatable animal is a toy, not swimming instruction or a life jacket. Avoid adding unfamiliar fins or training devices simply because there is room in the luggage; ask an instructor what is appropriate for your child.
Make the return trip easier by labeling bags and leaving one dry outfit where it can be reached without unloading everything. Count personal items before leaving, especially small goggles and sandals that disappear in a pile of towels.
Arrange shore comfort separately
Choose a beach access that works for the group, then decide how many adults can carry the equipment while supervision continues. Our toddler beach-toy guide focuses on manageable play on the sand.
BeachDay does not provide children’s swim instruction, life jackets or specialist swim gear. The current rental packages supply beach seating and shade, with other listed equipment depending on the package. Delivery is to your accommodation, and you carry and set up the gear.
