Beach Paddle Ball: A Simple Rally Game for Two

Choose the version you want to play

Some sets use solid paddles and a small ball; others use different racket shapes or a tethered ball. Read the product description before buying or borrowing. “Paddle ball” is also used for other sports, so specify the beach set you mean if someone else is packing it.

Check handles and edges for damage, and choose equipment appropriate for the players’ ages. A lightweight set can fit into a beach bag, but small balls are easy to lose. Count the pieces before leaving your accommodation and again when packing up.

Start with a cooperative rally

Stand close enough to return a gentle underhand hit without running. One player drops the ball into a soft serve; the other tries to return it at an easy height. Count successful exchanges together, then reset when the ball lands.

Adjust one thing at a time. Move farther apart, alternate forehand and backhand, or set a shared target count. For a mixed-ability pair, allow a bounce or a catch and restart. Keeping the challenge cooperative prevents one stronger player from ending every round immediately.

Find room without taking over the beach

Play away from chairs, walkovers and the waterline, leaving extra space behind each person. Keep nesting markers and wildlife well outside the playing area. If people need to walk through, stop the rally and give them room.

Wind can make a small ball unpredictable. Shorten the distance or take a break rather than sending harder shots across a crowded area. In unsettled weather, pack up early; the National Weather Service identifies lightning as a serious beach hazard.

Bring the gear your game requires

BeachDay’s current Beach Squad package includes a beach-games category, but the exact selection needs confirmation. Do not assume that a paddle set, spare balls or a particular brand will be supplied. Bring a favorite set if your trip depends on it.
