What to Do in Treasure Island: Beach, Trail and Bay Outings

Treasure Island works well as a beach base with short outings between visits to the sand. Choose one beach area, then add a shoreline walk, a bay-side activity or an evening plan that fits your accommodation.

Choose one part of the island for the beach session

Treasure Island has several distinct beach areas. The central stretch has the broad beach and nearby restaurant corridor; Sunshine Beach lies toward John’s Pass at the north end; Sunset Beach occupies the southern neighborhood. John’s Pass Village is across the bridge in Madeira Beach, and downtown St. Petersburg is across the causeway to the east. Treat either as an additional outing rather than part of a short walk around Treasure Island.

Pair central beach time with the Beach Trail

The destination guide identifies the Beach Trail as a paved shoreline walking and cycling route. It gives your group a way to enjoy the beach setting without making every part of the outing a walk through sand. The city’s beach guide places the trail between 104th and 119th avenues. Choose a short out-and-back section first; you can turn around when the group has had enough.

For public arrival points, the Treasure Island FAQs list the Gulf Front Lot at 104th Avenue and the City of St. Petersburg Municipal Beach at 112th Avenue and Gulf Boulevard. The latter is physically in Treasure Island despite its name. Expect paid public parking and read the signs before unloading; the 112th Avenue lot is operated separately from the city’s lots. Keep the route back to the car or lodging clear in everyone’s mind.

A beachfront address still leaves a walk across the sand to reach the water. When carrying several chairs or traveling with children, try the access route before committing to a large load. Keep bicycles and beach carts out of the way when stopping on the paved trail.

Use Treasure Bay for a change of shoreline

The city’s Treasure Bay recreation page lists its living shoreline, walking trail and kayak/paddleboard launch as open in our October 4, 2026 check. It also states that the infield grass remains closed while it grows in and asks visitors to stay on the trail. This is a specific bay-side walk, separate from the central Gulf Beach Trail.

Tennis and pickleball courts have an online reservation link on the same city page. Reserve the activity you actually intend to use and check its hours separately: the trail and launch close at sunset Monday through Saturday, earlier than some evening court sessions. The city currently lists a 3 p.m. Sunday closing for both. Recheck the city page before setting off. The city still lists no golf or footgolf; older descriptions of the nine-hole course should not be used to plan a round.

For a simple visit, choose the walking trail without adding a rental or class. For a more active afternoon, arrange a court first and build the beach day around that appointment. A launch being open does not establish suitable conditions or equipment availability for a paddling trip.

Give Sunset Beach its own outing

Sunset Beach is useful when you want to explore the island’s southern neighborhood, especially if your accommodation is already there. The tourism bureau identifies parking near 80th Terrace and West Gulf Boulevard and at Sunset Beach Pavilion. Use signed public lots and follow current signs. The city’s parking guidance asks beach visitors not to park on neighborhood streets.

You can make this the main beach session or return later for an open Gulf view. Our Treasure Island sunset guide covers that decision in more detail. Avoid driving south simply to watch the same sunset if your own beach access already gives your group the view and return route it wants.

Add one interest, without overfilling the day

For a date-specific visit, check Sanding Ovations for the announced sand-sculpture program. It is a seasonal event, not a year-round display to expect on any beach afternoon. For shopping or a dolphin outing, use the separate Treasure Island shopping guide or dolphin-tour guide to choose the specific stop or departure point.

A realistic day from a central accommodation

Still choosing your base? Our Treasure Island lodging guide distinguishes direct beach access from bayfront stays and the Sunset Beach neighborhood. Use your actual access route to adapt this plan.

  1. Morning: walk to your chosen central beach access and stay for one comfortable beach session.
  2. Midday: return to the accommodation for lunch, a rinse and rest. Put away the beach gear.
  3. Afternoon: choose a short Beach Trail walk or the Treasure Bay outing. You do not need both.
  4. Evening: choose a nearby meal from our Treasure Island restaurant guide, with sunset or music as an optional addition based on the group’s energy.

Families with a nap schedule can stop after the morning beach and make the short walk their only second outing. For BeachDay gear during a Treasure Island stay, delivery and pickup are at the accommodation; guests carry and set up the equipment. Confirm your accommodation’s outside-equipment rules before ordering. This keeps the return to lodging a useful break before the next activity.
